Iran’s Newborn Hearing Screening Program
A Global Standard in Early Detection and Care for Hearing Impairment
In recent years, Iran has emerged as a quiet leader in the field of early hearing detection, implementing one of the world’s most comprehensive Newborn Hearing Screening Programs (NHSP). As part of its commitment to public health and inclusive care, Iran is now one of only seven countries worldwide partnering with the World Health Organization to roll out a nationwide system for screening infants for hearing loss at birth.
This program reflects not only Iran’s scientific and medical capabilities, but also its deep-rooted emphasis on family wellbeing and long-term care — values that continue to shape both its domestic and international healthcare services.
Early Detection that Transforms Lives
The Newborn Hearing Screening Program was launched in 1384 (2005–2006) and is designed to detect hearing impairment within the first month of a baby’s life, followed by necessary interventions before six months of age. These early months are crucial for a child’s speech, cognitive development, and emotional health — and timely intervention can make all the difference.
Through this program, over 95% of newborns in Iran are now screened shortly after birth. What once took years to diagnose can now be identified within weeks, offering children a much greater chance at full and healthy development.
Nationwide Reach — Even in Remote Areas
With over 700 screening centers — including both permanent clinics and mobile units — Iran’s program ensures that access is not limited to urban hospitals. Mobile teams routinely travel to rural and underserved regions to screen babies, ensuring that no child is left behind due to distance or economic hardship.
This network makes hearing screening a routine part of postnatal care in Iran — something that many developed nations still struggle to implement on a wide scale.
What Happens After a Diagnosis?
When hearing loss is detected, families are supported at every stage. The Welfare Organization of Iran provides:
Hearing aids and cochlear implants
Speech therapy, psychological support, and educational rehabilitation
Genetic counseling for families with a history of hearing loss
Much of this care is publicly funded, with families paying a small contribution — typically around 10 million rials (about $10 USD) — for some rehabilitation services. In more serious cases, especially for children under six years of age, cochlear implants are provided entirely free of charge by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Welfare Organization.
Open to All — Including International Patients
What makes this program especially notable is that international patients can also benefit from these services. Families visiting Iran or seeking specialized care from abroad can consult with Iran’s leading audiologists and otolaryngologists, many of whom are trained to provide culturally sensitive, expert care. Medical travelers often find Iran’s healthcare not only advanced and affordable, but deeply humane in its approach.
A Quiet Success with Global Recognition
So far, Iran’s program has screened millions of babies and diagnosed over 50,000 cases of hearing impairment. The average age of detection has dropped from three years to as early as one year or younger, dramatically improving the potential outcomes for these children.
This success has earned international recognition, and Iran continues to serve as a model for other countries looking to establish similar programs — especially in the Middle East and Asia.
For families who value early childhood health, and for those seeking ethical, expert-led care abroad, Iran’s Newborn Hearing Screening Program offers a shining example of healthcare that is both accessible and life-changing.
