A Sanctuary of Hope: Expanding the Horizon of Healing in Tehran
The new Iran Cancer Institute stands as a testament to resilience, charity, and the advancement of compassionate care for all.
For those traveling to Iran, the journey is often one of spiritual renewal, a physical and emotional pilgrimage to sacred sites. But as any traveler knows, health is the foundation upon which all our journeys are built. This June, Tehran has opened a new door for those seeking healing—a massive, state-of-the-art facility that promises to be a beacon of hope not just for Iranians, but for those from across the region facing the daunting challenge of cancer.
The new Iran Cancer Institute, now the largest of its kind in West Asia, recently opened its doors within the Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex. More than just a marvel of modern engineering—an 18-story structure spanning 60,000 square meters—it is a story of profound human dedication.
Built on the Foundation of Care
What makes this achievement particularly touching is its origin. The construction was made possible through charitable contributions, most notably by Gholam Hossein Motahari, who funded the center in memory of his late mother, Najmolmouk Motahari. It serves as a reminder that the most significant advancements in medicine are often driven by the universal desire to care for one another and to honor the love of those who came before us.
Despite the challenges of recent years, this project was completed in under six years, fueled by a collective national determination to ensure that patients—whether from Tehran, a distant village, or visiting from abroad—receive the highest standard of care.
Advanced Care, Accessible to All
The institute is designed to treat the whole person, integrating complex treatments like immunotherapy, gene therapy, and the advanced robotic precision of a CyberKnife system with essential support services. It houses:
Over 610 inpatient beds dedicated to oncology.
19 advanced operating rooms.
Specialised departments covering everything from pediatric oncology to palliative care.
For the pilgrim or the visitor who may find themselves or a loved one in need of medical support while in Iran, this facility represents a significant leap in accessibility. It aims to offer world-class oncology services at a fraction of the cost found in many other parts of the world, upholding the principle that high-quality, compassionate healing should be attainable.
More Than a Hospital
While the new building focuses on clinical excellence, the legacy of the institute continues in its original site, which has been preserved as a center for research and education. This ensures that the expertise gained over nearly eight decades of history is passed on to the next generation of healers.
As we traverse the paths of our lives, whether they lead us to the shrines of Mashhad and Qom or to the quiet corners of a hospital ward, we are reminded that health is a precious gift. The opening of this institute is a testament to the fact that even in the face of great adversity, humanity’s drive to heal, comfort, and support one another remains stronger than ever.
May this sanctuary serve as a place of comfort, strength, and recovery for all who pass through its doors.
